Reef Fish - Scientific Surveys

Only recently have scientific surveys been done in the Raja Ampat area. Dr. Gerry Allen reported seeing 273 species of fish in a one hour dive 5 min. from the Kri Island Eco-Resort (Irian Diving). On a recent survey by Conservation International, 950 species were counted in a 2 week survey. The team compared this to 270 species found in a similar survey in PNG. Irian Diving provides the logistics and support for these scientists. In case you are paying attention, those are 'digital' spinecheek anemonefish in this photo. They were originally red, but you never know what new species you will find in Raja Ampat!
